Kingston Wharves participated in Read Across Jamaica Day (May 7), by visiting two schools in communities in proximity to the port community – The Union Gardens Early Childhood Institution and Greenwich Primary.

From early in the day, the team from Kingston Wharves, armed with books, snacks and other goodies for the children arrived at the Union Gardens Early Childhood Institution greeted by Principal Gracie-Ann Moss-Solomon and other teachers. They were quickly ushered to classrooms and open spaces to share wonderful reading adventures with the children.

The children at Union Gardens who were celebrating Grand Parents’ Day were dressed like older persons in wigs, fake moustaches and beards with chalk dust for grey hair. They were fully engaged, listening attentively, asking questions. Over 200 students were regaled with numerous stories from regional authors and from around the globe as well as other classroom activities. Milk and cookies for the children capped off the eventful day at Union Gardens.

After Union Gardens, it was off to Greenwich Primary where the children were observing characters day, where they dressed like princess, animals and superheroes. The KWL team were deployed to various classes to have interactive reading sessions with the children.

KWL’s Corporate Services and Client Experience Manager Simone Murdock said that the day was well spent and that the KWL team enjoyed the process of reading to and entertaining the children. She disclosed that Kingston Wharves had donated to the establishment of reading rooms at both institutions.

“Our goal is to support the effort to hone literacy and numeracy skills of our children, because these are the foundation of their success in life, “Mrs. Murdock said, adding that KWL has been a longstanding supporter of the Union Gardens Early Childhood Institution and is committed to the growth and development of both students and teachers.

In the meantime, Mrs. Gracie-Ann Moss-Solomon thanked the team from Kingston Wharves for the company’s continued support.
