Kingston Wharves has awarded scholarships and gifts amounting to some $600,000, to 28 children of its employees who sat the Primary Exit Profile (PEP) exams and are heading to high school this September. The presentations were made at a ceremony at the Knutsford Court Hotel in Kingston recently. The children were also feted and given the opportunity to interact with executives of the Company.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony, CEO of Kingston Wharves Grantley Stephenson congratulated the students. Noting that they had worked hard to successfully get through PEP, he reminded them that high school required even greater focus and dedication.
The CEO urged the children to commit to their studies to become a success and make their parents proud. Parents want to see their children do better than they did, so they are expecting you to do well. Work hard and get a profession so that you can become a valuable citizen of this country, contributing positively to national and global development,” Mr. Stephenson underscored.
While advising the youngsters to choose relevant careers, he encouraged them to strike the balance between academics and involvement in extra-curricular activities
“Your academics are important, but it’s not about just going to school and getting ahead in your academics, you must strike a balance with sports; sports these days is one of the biggest businesses in the world” he said, adding, “If you can do both academics and sports you are ahead of the game.”
Observing that the opportunities for youngsters were endless, he encouraged them to grasp these chances with both hands. “So you have to be wise. Determine what you want to do, set goals and work towards achieving them and you will be a success,” he said.
In her response on behalf of the awardees, Celece Samuels who heads to Ardenne High School, expressed appreciation to Kingston Wharves for its generosity, noting that it signaled the company’s belief in education as the key to success.
Celece congratulated her fellow awardees and wished them success in their academic endeavours, also thanking parents and guardians who had supported them over the years. “Our parents and guardians have dedicated their efforts to ensure we got to this milestone; we love you and thank you for being with us today,” she said.
